Entry to Practice Examination

The Entry to Practice Examination is a test of comptency, knowledge, skill, safety and professionalism in the practice of massage therapy.

The purpose of the examination process is to assure the public and the massage therapy profession that those candidates who pass the examination have performed at a level suitable for practicing as primary health care providers by meeting the provincial competency objectives, and that they pose no observable risk to the public. The examination is designed to evaluate the suitability for practice in the Alberta massage therapy environment. It is the candidate's responsibility to ensure they correctly expose themselves to matters and concerns specific to massage therapy in Alberta.

Membership with the Massage Therapist Association of Alberta is an assurance to the public and insurance companies across Canada that the individual is capable of practicing competently, safely and is regulated by the Association's professional standard.

The Entry to Practice Examination is composed of one written component and one practical component as follows:

  • Scientific Knowledge - written, 100 multiple choice questions
  • Practical Skills - assessment, treatment, case history and landmarking

The Practical Skills area is based on an OSCE format (Objective Structural Clinical Examination), with the questions reflecting to the greatest extent possible a clinical rather than academic perspective.

A Study Guide is supplied to all registered exam applicants in order to assist with their preparation. The Guide supplies sample questions as well as a list of references that may be helpful in studying.

All applicants are allowed two (2) rewrites on any portion of the examination, provided that they meet the eligibility requirements, submit a completed application packet and proper fees each time. If an applicant is not successful within these attempts, they must wait up to one year from the last retake examination and retake the entire exam again. The applicant is required to retake only the stations that were unsuccessfully mastered.
